Until Dr. Barnard's scientific breakthrough, most health professionals believed that once you developed diabetes, you were stuck with it--and could anticipate one complication after another, from worsening eyesight and nerve symptoms to heart and kidney problems. But as this groundbreaking work reveals, this simply is not true. In a series of studies--the most recent funded by the National Institutes of Health--Dr. Barnard has shown that it is possible to repair insulin function and reverse type 2 diabetes. By following the scientifically proven, life-changing program described in Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes, diabetics can control blood sugar three times more effectively than with the standard diet; and cut back on and in some cases eliminate medications while reducing the risk of diabetes complications.

" The long overdue epic scientific breakthrough in diabetes is here... an obvious must-read for health professionals and for diabetic and potential diabetic patients." --Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., MD, preventive cardiology consultant, Cleveland Clinic

"This is the approach to follow... the clinically proven way to get your blood sugar under control... and start living again."--John McDougall, MD, founder and medical director of the McDougall program
"Dr. Barnard's book is no exaggeration... The signs and symptoms of diabetes can be reversed, and he's got the evidence to prove it."--Jennie Brand-Miller, PhD, author of The New Glucose Revolution

One needs to use common sense when approaching an eating plan. It took the person who wrote the book The Vegetarian Myth 20 years to realize that the cause of why she was feeling terrible was her diet. I thought The Vegetarian Myth was an horrible book and badly written. The comment below sounds like a political rant.

I went on the Atkins diet for 3 days and I felt terrible. Excess protein causes bone loss and kidney problems, as the excess is secreted along with calcium.

I believe that the Vegan diet is best but hard to follow. If you follow it and feel better stay on it. I like Dr Fuhrman common sense approach. He says to try to follow a vegetarian diet 60% of the time.

I have read this book through my local regional library network twice now. One was a quick scan, which seemed even then shocking. The author's name seemed familiar, so I did some research and then re-read it. In detail. And was even more shocked. Diabetics who used this program and worsened (99% I am sure) should form a web group and pursue a major class action lawsuit.

If people are vegan / vegetarian by nature or for "spiritual" reasons, that is fine.

But do not promote that eating style as a diabetes treatment. It is just the opposite (read "The Vegetarian Myth").

Neal Bernard is a practitioner of Junk Science and pseudo nutrition who pushes a POLITICAL agenda with a book that can kill people!

Neal D. Barnard is "an American doctor, author, clinical researcher"....AND the founding president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), an international network of doctors, scientists, and laypeople (mostly vegan / vegetarian laypeople).

In 1985, Barnard founded the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). The organization is opposed to some medical and scientific practices that it considers harmful to human health, and promotes the health benefits of a vegetarian and vegan diet.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., which promotes a vegan diet (compare this with the LOW Carbs and higher Fat - good fats, such as Animal Fats and Tropical Oils which are also high in saturated fat, and moderately high Protein for Diabetes control....read "Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution" for a good example)

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the foundation that manages it—the Foundation to Support Animal Protection, also known as the PETA Foundation—donated over $850,000 to PCRM between 1988 and 2000, and Barnard sat on the Foundation's board until 2005. Barnard also writes a medical column for Animal Times, PETA's magazine.

Barnard has co-signed letters, on PCRM letterhead, with the leader of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, an animal-rights group the Department of Justice calls a "domestic TERRORIST threat." An agency called the Foundation to Support Animal Protection has distributed money from PETA to PCRM in the past and, until very recently, did both groups' books. Barnard and PETA head Ingrid Newkirk are both on the foundation's board.

I point this out to demonstrate the purely political agenda involved with the contents of this book.

Prior to the development of biosynthetic insulin in 1922, doctors routinely treated diabetes with an extremely LOW CARB diet. There is a free booklet on the Internet called "Diabetic Cookery" which was published in 1917 that clearly reflects the ROUTINE PROTOCOL in treating diabetes at that time (older doctors of that pre 1922 era who used an extremely Low Carb protocol could actually "cure" many of their patients - AS LONG AS THEY STAYED WITH THE REGIMEN... compare that with babies born with Type One Diabetes who rarely lived to their first birthday).

And yet the opposite of that approach is what "Doctor" Bernard proposes. In other words, a protocol that will WORSEN diabetes!

It would also be excellent to read books and articles by Gary Taubes. His article "What If It's All Been a Big Fat Lie" (from the NYT, actually many years ago) is available online.

For years I followed the American Diabetic Diet (low carb) and never was able to reach normal blood sugar levels even with exercise. And I felt bad and tired all the time. After 6 weeks on Neal Barnard's program, my numbers are in a normal healthy range. I am eating as much as I like and eating carbs. I feel great and have more energy and have lost 32 pounds so far! I am not going back to the American Diet. A vegan diet is the way to go for better health and higher energy and lower weight! This book and program is highly recommended for quick results!!!
