When their strait-laced, domineering father, Sir Clement Carnell, dies, Valentine throws open their Devonshire estate of Pennacombe to their fashionable cousins from London and Louisa feels free at last to reject the man Sir Clement wanted her to marry. Soon, the temptations of Regency London beckon, including the beautiful, scandalous, and very married Lady Harriet Eversholt, with whom Valentine becomes dangerously involved. Meanwhile, Louisa finds that freedom of choice is as daunting as it is exciting. Will the opportunity to indulge in a little folly lead to fulfillment--or disaster?

I enjoyed the witty banter but there was a lot of it. I did see the ending, no surprises there. A good read but slow moving with all that chatter.

Enchanting and very entertaining.
Some follies are larger than others.
Surprising turns of events.
Typical of the time period, conversations according to social conventions lead characters in directions they had never imagined.

Only if you have nothing better to read. If I didn't know that Jude Morgan (a male writer) has written many bks, I would have thought this bk was a first novel. A lot of the action happens offstage. Pearce Lynley's attachment comes out of nowhere. 406 pages is too long.

If you're a fan of the Jane Austen time period, this book is great. There are all sorts of hidden jokes. Jude Morgan is very witty. I enjoyed this book a lot! The conversations flow very naturally and cleverly.
