Author Aria Beth Sloss examines the friendship of two young women in the late 1950s. There's the studious and quiet Rebecca, who struggles to keep her career ambitions in check against what society expects of her; and the wild and exuberant Alexandra, who's carefree ways leave her dancing through life.

Sloss does her best to portray complex young women, but ultimately both end up coming off as unsympathetic and under-developed. An unusual twist in the middle of the book sets the characters on a course that changes their life course, yet doesn't seem to be authentically written.

I enjoyed this book, although I did have some issues with the so-called friendship between the two main women. It didn't seem quite plausible to me, but then again, it's this same conflict that helps drive the book. It's a good lesson to learn what happens to women when they are deprived of choices and the opportunities to make their dreams come true.

It wasn't a bad read, but not as engaging as I had hoped.

Even now, I could no more chart her influence than I could the gravitational powers that rule the tides. I suppose that could be said of anyone we love, that their effects on our lives run so deeply, with such grave force, we hardly know what they mean until they are gone.
