Beyond Bestsellers: Lee Child

by Craig B. When Jim Grant was sacked from Granada Television in 1995 after 18 years of service, he was incensed. He knew that he and new management didn’t exactly see eye-to-eye, but he hadn’t expected to come back from vacation and find a termination letter on his work computer. So he decided to get even. No, he didn’t go back to the office and start swinging a bat. Instead, he went home and… (more)

Why compare Lee Child’s work to a western? Because Jack Reacher is Shane. He appears in a small towns that are being oppressed rich despots, sees injustice, exacts revenge on the bad guys, then disappears as mysteriously as he arrived.

A stranger comes to town with a mysterious past... A cliche premise in the modern era, but this novel still has enough compassion and wisdom to make it worth reading.

the comment directly below this, runs the risk of being a spoiler, as it delineates the main characters' characters. the only thing left out, is the plot. i could do a similar thing, were i to spoil the movie, by writing the essence of the most emotionally scene of the film. would i do that ? maybe it's a question of intent. the writer mentioned above, does she or he intend to help poor students to write their school paper? some may view this as 'good intention;' some may not. 'it's you that decides/ which way you will turn...'no one around you, will carry the blame for you/ no one around you, will love you today, throw it all away./ tomorrow when you rise,/ another day for you to realise you/ or bring you down again/ to your own made end. . . . '

A true classic western novel that is still compelling reading today. While the plot is comparatively simple and focused, the characterizations are excellent and the story is powerful. Joe Starrett and his wife Marian and his son Bob are homesteaders in Wyoming. The local cattle baron is determined to buy out – or drive off – the farmers so he can keep the open range for his expanding cattle business. The Starretts are not going to leave. Into the mix rides a mysterious stranger, Shane, who appears to be trying to escape his past. He goes to work for the Starretts and becomes their knight to protect them from the cold-blooded cattle baron.

This well-written story goes beyond the plot to show you the character of Shane, and the three Starretts: the father who admires Shane, the mother who finds herself attracted to his mysterious nature, and the son who hero-worships Shane and his dangerous abilities.

Alongside this short, uncomplicated, riveting story of a small family homesteading in the American West and the violent conflict between the farmers and ranchers in their small community is another beautiful, uplifting vision of a Christ figure in the person of a stranger who comes to town to stand on the side of righteousness, purity, kindness, and love. This is a story suitable for tweens through adults and will provide lots to discuss.

Texts are almost always richer than visuals, Shane is no exception. The movie itself is highly regarded, as one of the best Western movies ever made. This novel on which the movie was based on, however, seems having more depth and stronger resonance to readers. It's a beautifully written, heart-warming novel that will be read for a long time.
