This series is marvelous. The cast of characters led by "Captain" Alatriste are fascinating. A wonderful examination of Spain as her empire begins its slow decline.

I actually saw the movie first (DVD available from the Library) and was disappointed. The movie strings together scenes from several of the books which at least gave me a visual reference in my head as I read the books.
