...Well, half of one, anyway."
Welcome to the Big Apple. There's a troll under the Brooklyn Bridge, a boggle in Central Park, and a beautiful vampire in a penthouse on the Upper East Side--and that's only the beginning. Of course, most humans are oblivious to the preternatural nightlife around them, but Cal Leandros is only half-human.
His father's dark lineage is the stuff of nightmares--and he and his entire otherworldly race are after Cal. Why? Cal hasn't exactly wanted to stick around long enough to find out.
He and his half-brother Niko have managed to stay a step ahead for three years, but now Cal's dad has found them again. And Cal is about to learn why they want him, why they've always wanted him...for he is the key to unleashing their hell on earth. The fate of the human world will be decided in the fight of Cal's life...

Add a CommentA good urban fantasy book, with an enjoyable overall plot, good origin story of Cal and Niko Leandros, and great overall pacing. The one thing that left me flat was the relatively poor dialog, in my opinion. It felt juvenile, but not in a "young adult writing" kind of way, but in a first novel kind of way. Certainly not bad enough for me to not want to read more of the story, but definitely bad enough that I am hoping it gets sharper as the series progresses!
This book is the author's first novel and well worth the read. Outrageious supernaturals turn up one after another, even in Central Park, but it's the hip writing, the incredible wit ,the deft human touch that elevates this fiction. Loved , loved, loved it and can't wait to read the sequel. Stephen Kind, look out--Rob Thurman is striking a bold swath through horror, mystery and legend. Carolyn
Aw, it's not "very good" in a literary sense, it was just so darn much fun, I haven't enjoyed a new fantasy (or whatever) series like this in years. Cal's a cynical soulmate of Corwin of Amber. The brothers together are everything I like about their TV counterparts Sam and Dean Winchester. The evil villains are great.
enter the darker side of life in the supernatural world.
but i loved it alot. can't wait for the next one.
no lagging in the book at all.
you really feel for the characters and can't wait for next adventure.
This is such a great series. Smart, funny, suspenseful and surprising. A great read for fans of urban fantasy.
