I can describe this book in four words: Disgusting, creepy, horrific, wonderful.

What a great read. Great story, disturbing visuals and twists galore. Twisted by the whispers of the Rot (a dark, mysterious realm of death and decay), three totems have split and are out to eat the world. Only Animal Man stands in the way ((??). Actually it turns out he's not powerful enough, and rather it's his four-year old, and a cat named Socks, will have to take care of business.

Urrrgh, so torn on this one!

One the one hand, the relate-a-bility of the Dad-Who-is-Also-A-Lesser-Known-Superhero angle was great fun, and well portrayed- who knew Mother-in-Laws can apparently even disapprove of super powers?

On the other hand, while I recognize and applaud the art for its bold originality, I do a lot of my reading at lunch-time, folks, and a lot of these inside out, contorted, Hieronymous Bosch-meets-Salvador Dali images just didn't sit well with my bologna on rye. The cover image is a fair example, and there are entire pages that go waaaaay beyond inside (honestly, Moms and Dads, keep out of reach of small or squeamish kiddies).

Don't know if I'll continue with the series myself, but I do encourage everyone to try and decide for themselves if it's their kind of thing.

I had some reservations about this. I thought it was going to be some hipsters wet dream about a PETA member. I really enjoyed this, I didn't like the art, but I'll give the series a go.

Not worth it in my opinion, in spite of the fact that I love Jeff Lemire's "Sweet Tooth." Disappointing art and writing in general so far. Doubt I'll be reading the rest of the series. If you want a similar plot with a serious jump in quality, try Alan Moore's "Swampthing." It's amazing.

Lemire (creator of Sweet Tooth) takes a break from drawing and weaves a cool mythical story about meat and the guardians that watch over its domain. There's a cool tie-in with The New 52 Swamp Thing, so checking that out is worth it. Also Morrison's run on Animal Man will give anyone a deeper appreciation for this modern take. I love the art, but found that sometimes the black and white originals were more powerful and actually lost some dynamism after being coloured. I love the werid magicness to this book!

Never read an Animal Man before, now I can't wait for the next one. The Red, the Rot and now only Swamp Thing can save the world. The art is awesome and this story is outta this world. Could not put it down once I started reading. Another great 52!!

The art was eye catching, but the story seemed to me to be a clone of an old Swamp Thing arc, where he battled the Grey (if I remember) to save the Green. Here they are trying to make an animal avatar which battles the Rot, to save the newly minted Red. Especially do not like the fact that his 4 year old daughter is the real Avatar. I like Animal Man, and don't mind him changing, but am not interested in a toddler hero. I'll read part two when it's out and hope for better.

First volume for the character in the post reboot DC universe. I had some familiarity with the character previously through his regular arc through the year long 52 title. This doesn't work personally for me- the artistic style detracted the impact of the story.
