"Embark on an extraordinary coming-of-age adventure as Simba, a lion cub who cannot wait to be king, searches for his destiny in the great 'Circle of Life'"--Container.

Opinion

From Library Staff

Catchy music, silly characters, and an emotional storyline make this Disney story a forever favorite.

A boy's father is murdered by his uncle, who then assumes control of the kingdom. The boy spends half the story procrastinating and feeling sorry for himself before finally seeking revenge. Hamlet, you say? No, it's the Lion King, silly!

Looking to tell the story of Shakespeare's Hamlet to the crayon crowd? Never fear, The Lion King is here. The evil uncle kills his brother to gain power while the dead king's cub runs away think he is at fault for his father's death. All beautifully executed as a memorable musical.

The Lion King is a 1994 Disney film directed by Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers, and starring Jeremy Irons and Matthew Broderick. In the beginning we see all the animals in the Savanna gathering to watch the presentation of the lion cub, Simba, the child of King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi. When Simba is around 6 or 7, Mufasa shows him around the Savanna, their kingdom, and Simba strives to become King. His uncle Scar, however, becomes jealous and does whatever it takes to make himself king, like, sending hyenas to kill Simba and Nala, and attempting to kill Simba with a stampede, but kills Mufasa. Scared and confused, Simba listens to Scar and runs away. After many years in hiding with his new friends, now grown-up Simba gets called back by Nala to become the rightful King and overthrow the evil King Scar. The Lion King is my favorite Disney movie for many reasons. Here are a few: one, I really enjoyed the plot of the film. Two, the human-like characteristics of the animals. And three, the songs. In my opinion, The Lion King is the perfect movie.

Cannot praise this film enough. I have watched it over and over and never tire of it. Moves me to tears every time and the poetical Justice ending is always as satisfying. “Chapeau”, I raise my hat to all involved in its production.

Am I the only one who was absolutely bedazzled by the CGI reboot?! I thought it was amazing. Definitely worth your money. I felt more in tune with the characters in this than in the animation. Also, I thought it more accurately represented the African-ness of the characters and the overall story. (You could really see they were very accurately represented lions, hyenas, warthogs, meerkats and so on.) Plus you could tell they were truly African in character(they got African-American voice actors!) and not just white people hiding under the guise of explicitly African animals, who, if they're going to be presented as humans at all, should be made by the people who are actually native to that land. My only complaint about it was that they got rid of Ed the hyena!!! (Or at least he has no obvious appearance in the film.)

Twenty-five years ago, when The Lion King was first released, I was still too old to be interested in this movie, but here I am now, reviewing it. The animation is excellent, of course, but the arc of the story is entirely predictable. I suppose that isn't a bad thing if you're only trying to entertain children, but in 2019, there is virtually nothing here for adults except nostalgia. On top of that, there is only one song that could be described as memorable, unlike many other Disney classics. Putting the ordinariness of this movie aside, I still recommend it over the current CGI remake (NOT live action). From what I understand, Lion King 2019 is word for word, shot for shot like the original, but without any of the anthropomorphic gestures and facial expressions that gave the original its emotion. Save yourself the price of admission and popcorn, and take home this one for free.

This movie was probably the most heartbreaking children’s movie ever. Although I was very young when I first watched this and didn’t understand the sadness, now that I am older and rewatched the movie I cried my eyes out. The storyline is so well done and the movie itself looks fantastic. This movie is good for family movie nights as there are no inappropriate scenes or content in the movie. My favourite part was when Timon, Pumbaa and Simba sang Hakuna Matata! It is one of my favourite songs from this film! 5 out of 5 from me for sure! @SpookyCat of The Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board

The Lion King is a famous animated Disney movie released in 1994. This feature follows a young bubbly Simba, (prince of pride rock) and his adventures with his best friend Nala. Until one day a horrific event occurs at the paws of his uncle Scar, forcing Simba to flee pride rock until he is found wandering the desert by Timon and Pumba and begins living with them in a lush tropical forest until adulthood. One day his long lost friend Nala finds him and begs him to return home because of the condition Scar has left his former home. The four then travel back to pride rock to duel with Scar for the throne. I would strongly recommend this children's movie. @GoosReviews of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

The lion king is a great family friendly movie to watch! This is one of my favourite childhood movies! I enjoyed this movie because it’s a movie I use to watch when I was little and one of my favourite! This is a great movie the beginning is sad when Simbas dad dies especially because Simba is only a baby but this movie teachers us about independence and friendship and love and family and bravery!! I recommend any age group to watch this great movie! 5/5 Stars. @SunshineLove of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

One of the best Disney movies ever made. It's a masterpiece in acting, animation, music, and storytelling. Everything about it is perfect. The comedy is well done too, and not over the top or ridiculous.

I hadn't seen this movie in probably 20 years. The first few minutes (which was the trailer back then - the whole announcing the new prince thing - gave me goosebumps - it was so well done - especially for back then! But then, about 15 minutes into the film, I found myself asking "why the hell am I watching this?!" It's very much a kids movie - nostalgic to a degree, but then it ends up being the same old rewashed bag of glitter that Disney has used since day one. I was initially excited to see the upcoming live-action version of this, but after watching this again... idunno. I may pass.

I suppose that as a children's film, we should not be expecting very much complexity from the characters, except perhaps the main character. The flatness and one dimensional-ness of all of the bad guys is a little too much. Most of the songs are nowhere near as catchy as those in, say, The Jungle Book. There is no explanation as to why the land of the hyenas is off limits, and the very idea that the prey of the lions are going to be kneeling and worshiping the new king who will be eating them is beyond comprehension.

Pumbaa: Hey, Timon, ever wonder what those sparkly dots are up there?

Timon: Pumbaa, I don't wonder; I know.

Pumbaa: Oh. What are they?

Timon: They're fireflies. Fireflies that, uh... got stuck up on that big bluish-black thing.

Pumbaa: Oh, gee. I always thought they were balls of gas burning billions of miles away.

Timon: Pumbaa, with you, everything's gas.
