This guy is odd and writes in a way that you will like or not - he is not putting out pulp for the beach. You'll enjoy all the way or you'll put it down by page 20.
His portrayal of people is interesting, not exhausting, and enough to let you know who is who.
Stories have nice quirks. Relationships seem good but then they're not.
A little smut here and there - I think he wants to show that the "spiritual" aspect of relationships is overrated - and basic human urges are a big component - not usually to everyone's advantage.
Hard to classify his stuff - but after a couple of books digested, they seem to have their own genre. I would recommend to reader who needs a break from Russian negativism, spy thrillers, or nut cake Middle Eastern jihadists in novels. Not as crisp as Salinger but aiming more that way than another story of boring business titans or drug dealers.
Worth a try - make up your own mind.
Just finished this delightful read. I love Troppers descriptions -- plot turns and humor ! This is another of his book that would make a great movie.
Thirty. Shit. This is the mantra of the protagonist of Tropper's debut novel who is on the cusp of turning thirty. I turned thirty many years ago and the anticipation was worse than the reality. Growing older, regrets, life crises (divorce, unrequited love, drugs, stalled careers)and strained friendships are common themes in his books and he handles them with wit, nuance and bitter sweetness. In this novel, a group of friends kidnap their drug addicted movie star buddy, take him to a cabin and try to get him clean. It's a little like a very special episode of "Entourage," but funnier and less douche-y. If you like Tropper, you'll like this.
Turning thirty has never been fun, so I hear. This book is no different. The book mainly focus' on the past and regrets most the characters have. This is for anyone who is worried about thier age or anyone who is having a hard time moving on and growing up. B-
