Things are not going well for Inspector Salvo Montalbano. His relationship with Livia is once again on the rocks and -- acutely aware of his age -- he is beginning to grow weary of the endless violence he encounters. Then a young woman is found dead, her face half shot off and only a tattoo of a sphinx moth to identify her. The tattoo links her to three other girls, all victims of the underworld sex trade, who are all missing . . .

This is another great Inspector Montalbano mystery.

A young woman is found dead. The only way to identify her is by a tattoo of a sphinx moth on her shoulder. Inspector Montalbano links her to three other young woman (with the same tattoo) recently arrived from Russia and rescued from a "life on the streets" by a benevolent charity organization. Meanwhile, his relationship with his long-time girlfriend "Livia" is on the rocks.

Lots of humor, good food, and Sicilian atmosphere in the story - just like all novels by Andrea Camilleri. I read this while on a short holiday. It is perfect for that specific purpose because of the short chapters, the easy reading, and the assurance that it'll be enjoyable.

This book is #11 in the Inspector Salvo Montalbano series. This one was absorbing enough that I read it in a single day, though at some points it was difficult to follow the explanations being constructed; as in the previous book in the series, the myriad food bits are relatively short and easy to skip around and the personal-life parts were more believable than has been the case with some of the earlier books in the series.
