Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than twenty years' experience. During her shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she's been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don't want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene?

The story of "Small Great Things" is a powerful one - it's just too bad there was soooooooo much language, and two sex scenes. I have personally committed to not reading books with much of the former and none of the latter, so that was disappointing...especially as I listened to the audiobook. No easy way to escape either one. I feel like I need to wash my ears and mind out now. Picoult also paints with a broad brush, making sweeping generalizations and succumbing to one of the very things a character argues against in the book - labeling people based on the actions of a few. Some Tea Party members may be skinheads, but not all. Whether she likes it or not, her liberal bias shines through loud and clear.

This was a great audiobook with three good narrators. This book was difficult for me to listen to due to the frequent vulgar language. One of the characters is a white supremacist and his views were difficult to listen to. I almost stopped reading this story however I kept with it and overall was a good novel including an ending with quite a twist.
