Named for the Ojibwe word for little bear, Makoons and his twin, Chickadee, have traveled with their family to the Great Plains of 1860s Dakota Territory. There they must learn to become buffalo hunters and once again help their people make a home in a new land. But Makoons has had a vision that foretells great challenges -- challenges that his family may not be able to overcome. (Based on the author's own family history.)

I hadn't read any of the books in this series between The Birchbark House (which I read as a kid, and loved) and this one, so I don't think I quite got the full emotional heft of this that I would have gotten had I done so -- but I still really liked this. Erdrich does an excellent job of painting a picture of a world and life that will be very foreign to a lot of her readers, and yet doing it in a way that it never feels like an information dump. It's a really vivid, lovely look at a Native family and how they lived -- and it's definitely encouraged me to go back and fill in the gaps that I've missed in this series.
