Laurence Dalziel is worn down and washed up, and for him, the BDSM scene is all played out. Six years on from his last relationship, he's pushing forty and tired of going through the motions of submission. Then he meets Toby Finch. Nineteen years old. Fearless, fierce, and vulnerable. Everything Laurie can't remember being. Toby doesn't know who he wants to be or what he wants to do. But he knows, with all the certainty of youth, that he wants Laurie. He wants him on his knees. He wants to make him hurt, he wants to make him beg, he wants to make him fall in love. The problem is, while Laurie will surrender his body, he won't surrender his heart. Because Toby is too young, too intense, too easy to hurt. And what they have ? no matter how right it feels ? can't last. It can't mean anything. It can't be real.

If you’re looking for characters to feel for, admire, get a bit frustrated with and love this is the right place to go. Alexis Hall gets the age gap between his characters wonderfully, and portrays the possible problems in a way that will make you laugh, cringe at the reality and keep on reading. I admire his ability to make characters come to life and I’ve noticed when I read sometimes I read for the story or read for the characters or for both. Ideally a book will get you to read for both and at first I read for the character they are what stand out but then as a good book will the characters made you care for the story. Which, by the way holds a love I come back and read again for.

Well written, but not one of my favorites. For some reason this one couldn't keep me turning the pages, and I'm still not sure why. I guess it just wasn't for me.

That being said, I have many friends who seriously enjoyed it, so don't take my word for it. Read it and form your own opinion. Besides, it did will the RITA Award, and they certainly don't give those out for nothing, right?!
