Originally from California, this is a collection of Braverman's experiences in various parts of Norway and Alaska, before settling in Wisconsin. All along the way, she encounters brutality from men that are at times difficult to read. I found myself cheering for her as finds strength, clarity, and a sense of belonging. Although it isn't the central focus of the memoir, her enthusiasm for the dog sledding and her love for the dogs certainly shines through.

Most enjoyable memoir of a young woman from California finding herself and deciphering what is home, friendship and love. That this story takes place in Norway, Alaska, Maine, and Wisconsin makes the setting unique but the message is universal and at times poetic.

There were moments when this book shined and chunks when I couldn't wait to get to the next chapter. This is more of a personal memoir than an adventure/travel or dogsled work. I respect Blair and the situations she has endured, but the writing at times (the weaving and blending of many trips and storylines) felt disjointed. This is not a Cheryl Strayed style story, but it is a unique personal journey that many will find enjoyable.
