The future is nothing like you've imagined. Neither are its heroes.

From Library Staff

Joss Whedon's cult favorite sci-fi western. The crew of the Serenity frequently aligns with the lost "Browncoats" cause. Seen objectively, were the Browncoats any more benevolent than the seemingly evil Alliance?

Pairs with Saga, as both blend Western and Sci-Fi genres.

Firefly is an amazing TV show, though I wish we had gotten more than 14 episodes (and a so-so movie). Given how much fun and interesting the show was, I can only imagine I would have given it a 5/5 had we gotten multiple seasons and a clearer unpacking of the mythos. FOX aired the show out of order (the truly stunning pilot only aired *after* the much more mediocre train-chase episode - in fact, almost right before the series finale), among a number of other unfortunate administrative decisions that led to its untimely cancellation. But, if you like Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Space Westerns, or great ensemble dramedies, this is the show for you! As always, Whedon writes using his typical, somewhat problematic archetypes (e.g., the damaged-and-'crazy'-but-powerful lady), but manages them relatively well here. And in a neat bit of world-building, the 'Western' component of this show includes the influence of Chinese culture, not just the American Old West.

Finally, for anyone looking for more Firefly content, there is an ongoing comic series that is actually considered canon (they're a bit more hit-and-miss, but some goodies). We have them at the library.

This is hands down my favorite mini series. The movie was a justified ending but man I would have kindly given my left parsel for the series to be renewed. The main caste are genuinely amazing actors that play this western sci-fi so poignently. I wish i had anther 7 with it.... But Ill survive, it's b my third watch.. Wish Netflix had the cash to keep it on...oh wait they ssssss'Do

A space western that was canceled far too soon. In Firefly you get the best of Joss Whedon's comic and dramatic genius. The characters are well developed and lovable, and the world building is fantastic. This series easily lands in my top ten of all time!

Obligatory complaint that Firefly was canceled too soon.

Let me start by saying I really liked Firefly. It had an incredible cast, outstanding writing (as always with Whedon), and was an altogether fun show. When it first aired, it was something new and fresh, and until Westworld it was the only sci-fi western television series that became an instant cult classic with the masses. I was saddened when it was cancelled, and disappointed that it never made it back on air aside from the (extremely good) movie Serenity.

Here's where I diverge from most other fans: Even when it first aired, I couldn't shake the feeling that the crew of the Serenity were not really the 'heroes', or even 'anti heroes'. They were more like 'the badguys that occasionally do good things'. Anti-villains. It's been discussed on end by countless blogs and podcasts, but the analogies of the brownshirts to the confederacy was the first thing that came to mind when I first read about the show. In addition, the actions of the galactic alliance 'badguys' seem to make a lot more sense when looked at objectively. The 'good guy' outer brownshirt settlements still practiced slavery, were not as technologically advanced, and were constantly subject to competing warlords. They had no formal education system and looked at those who were educated with disdain. Meanwhile, the alliance was creating telepaths, hiring mercenaries, controlling interstellar commerce, and enforcing a brutal semi caste-based stability, true. That said, it makes sense that a society made up of refugees trying to prevent another civilizational collapse would do most of those things.

Anyway, thats my take. It was still a great show and I'd love a reboot all the same.

This is an amazing sci-fi tv-series with smart stories and great acting. If you like any of Joss Whedon's other work, you'll love this. I've watched it 3 times!

This has been recommended to me over and over through the years and I'm not sure why I never checked it out but I'm going to put this one under "Better Late than Never" - This is a great series... works on every level - action, humor, great characters, witty banter, intriguing relationships and a unique blending of the western/sci-fi genres - Now I will join the legions of people disappointed in its quick cancellation!

The Firefly series ran for only 14 episodes in 2002-3,
but there is a movie "Serenity", released in 2005,
that provides more ending to the series,
which was canceled very abruptly:

Other: Some of the coarse language is in Chinese, the show is 99.9% in English. There are little bits of Chinese here and there (hardly noticeable) because 500 years from now Joss Whedon felt that the Americans and Chinese (because of population/world power) would be the reigning superpowers so those would be considered the 2 main languages.
