This film owes as much to the affluent drug parties of the 70s & 80s as it does to anything from the 19th century, & some of the effects are terrible, some of the soundtrack is pretty terrible, & the characters are often loud, annoying, & histrionic. Nevertheless, Gabriel Byrne is excellent as the diabolical, mercurial Lord Byron, & I respect director Ken Russell's stylistic choices overall, even if he's a little dorkballz sometimes. Honestly for once I found the central thematic meditation of the film much more unsettling than the film itself, this idea that our fears of death are based on potentialities living alongside & within us, waiting always for a chance to manifest in our peaceful little lives. Bonus material: laudanum-fueled man-cuddling...! CR

Released in 1986 the movie Gothic is already dated in terms of special effects and cinematography. In 1816 Lord Byron and his guests experience a strange and frightening night in a Swiss villa. The group reads ghost stories and conjure up their own worst fears and nightmares. The experience is credited as the genesis for the book about Frankenstein as well as the creation of the vampire genre.
