"OLD RIVALRIES NEVER DIE. BUT SOME RIVALS DO. Juliet Townsend is used to losing. Back in high school, she lost every track team race to her best friend, Madeleine Bell. Ten years later, she's still running behind, stuck in a dead-end job cleaning rooms at the Mid-Night Inn, a one-star motel that attracts only the cheap or the desperate. But what life won't provide, Juliet takes. Then one night, Maddy checks in. Well-dressed, flashing a huge diamond ring, and as beautiful as ever, Maddy has it all. By the next morning, though, Juliet is no longer jealous of Maddy--she's the chief suspect in her murder. To protect herself, Juliet investigates the circumstances of her friend's death. But what she learns about Maddy's life might cost Juliet everything she didn't realize she had"-- Provided by publisher.

A decent mystery, but achingly predictable. The potential for intrigue and complexity were there, but the monochromatic protagonist and heavy-handed prose resulted in a rather anticlimactic unveiling of the true motive behind Maddy's murder. Despite Rader-Day's rather coercive writing-style, Juliet's narrative and the overall trajectory of the mystery often felt drawn-out. The incorporation of countless ancillary characters and abrupt conclusion left something to be desired.

The art of this book is in the telling - the reveal - the atmosphere. The chapters are short and that creates a quick pace. Even though that means there are a lot of breaks, I never wanted to stop reading. It sounds like a cliché, but I had a really hard time putting the book down. In fact, I would like to still be reading it.
