Tired of life as a Hollywood executive (yes, she's Sandra Bullock's sister!) and grieving the loss of her mother, Gesine Bullock-Prado finds herself channeling her unhappiness into baking. Ultimately, she takes off for Montpelier, VT, sets up a pastry haven and falls passionately in love with her work.

Such a story could easily turn into a saccharine, rhapsodic, narcissistic memoir of self-discovery but "My Life From Scratch" adopts a much more refreshing angle. Including nostalgia for the culinary methods of her mother and grandmother, the author takes the reader through her childhood in Austria and Germany and into the daily joys and difficulties of running a patisserie. She ends each chapter with a delicious-sounding recipe: apple pie, "golden eggs" and opera cake to name a few.

As self-professed misanthrope who loves the kitchen for its anonymity, Bullock-Prado displays both a humour and a remarkable honesty about her own character; baking provides her with a means of expressing goodness to the world and of being an integral part of people's lives in her new home town.

This was such a wonderful read. I completely related to Gesine being miserable at a job she hated to find that baking was her passion & pursuing that passion! Reading about some of her quirky customers reminded me of some of my own, too. Great little book!
