My favorite season... more subtle, a bit wiser humor-wise...maybe a little less raunchy. I rarely laugh out loud in front of the tv; a few of these episodes made my face hurt.

This fourth season is one of the best. After the third season, which I deemed the worst of the bunch, the fourth was filled with revelations and storylines for all of its characters. Heartbreak, revenge, shock, denial of the call . . . this season's got it all. Shosh is not a bit player this time. She is discouraged by the slim pickings of the job market and throws herself instead into a more political position. Jessa continues to disrupt and experiment and manipulate only to make a last-minute discovery about her calling. Marnie tries to blaze her path but not as a solo project, unfortunately failing to face the reality of the situation in favour of the fast track towards her own delusional projections and short-sighted goals. Oh, and Hannah -- when it rains, it pours. She figures out her own limitations and drops her original plans to discover other avenues. Perhaps they are the right ones; maybe not. We don't know. A lot of decisions aren't made by her but rather the ups and downs of life are thrust upon her. Hannah starts to look outside herself, realizing her parents are people, flaws and all, and not magical entities of authority and guardianship. This season is one about truly growing up and making the kinds of changes that allow one to learn boundaries and become an adult. Yes, these girls are pretty incorrigible, but if they don't learn some lessons soon, growing is going to be awful painful. This season of hard truths is my favourite. It was delightful and every single episode was a treat. I very highly recommend the fourth season of GIRLS.
