Very graphic story of Nazi occupation. More interesting than The Potato Peelings Pie novel. I liked this character's gumption and courage thru every situation she was in. Courage is doing some act even when you are scared silly. I…

Many war based stories are a bit tedious (how much can you say?) but this book was fresh and enjoyable.

I loved the novel. The majority of the story took place on June 5, 1944 And ended on June 6, 1944. If you enjoy WWII stories, you will love this one. Would recommend.

The story is told in little vignettes as Emma bakes throughout the day on June 5 — vignettes about characters in the village, village history, instances that occurred during the German occupation, and flashbacks and memories leading up to…

I found this book too formulaic for my taste, and the writing uninspiring. About half way through I skipped to the last couple of chapters just to finish it. It didn’t strike me as anything new or fresh about the French resistance and the…

I just finished this book and want to recommend it to all my friends. So many books I have read about war focus on the soldiers. We so rarely it seems remember the civilians, whose lives are completely turned on end during an occupation,…

Fans of historical fiction, during World War II will love this. Emmanuelle was so brave and gave her small town villagers so much hope. Definitely a page-turner.

Really loved this book - beautifully written of a very difficult time. I could visualize the characters and scenes easily, a rich tapestry of small town France under occupation. It ends with liberation by the Allies - satisfying read.…

I think the story is a bit “cheesie.” After reading The Baker’s Secret, I read The Boat Runner. Also Historical fiction, but so engaging. I finished it in one day.

Relative to WWII books based on fact, this is an engrossing story that pulls one into the life of Emma - and her mission to protect as many of her fellow villagers as possible. I would recommend this book.

For fans of All the Light We Cannot See and World War II historical fiction, this is a well written and engaging story of what day to day life was like in a small Nazi occupied French Normandy village just prior to and during the D-Day…

Stephen Kiernan has written a fantastic novel depicting a slice of life in occupied France during WWII. He has put together a story of bravery and survival amidst grueling hardship and starvation. Young 22 year old Emma had never…
