Gray Whales: From Baja to the Salish Sea

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Clinton Library

Description

Join Orca Network's Cindy Hansen as we learn about the biology and status of Gray Whales, and about a small local group known as the Sounders, who have found a food source in North Puget Sound that may be saving their lives.  Cindy Hansen is the Education and Advocacy Coordinator for Orca Network, and was a naturalist/guide at Laguna San Ignacio in Baja Mexico for 20 years.

*Event held at Clinton Community Hall: 6411 Central Ave, Clinton, WA 98236, located just around the corner from the Clinton Library, right off the Hwy. The parking lot is just behind the drive through coffee stand.

Gray whales are unique in many ways. They are the only living member of their family and genus, and the only whale that primarily bottom feeds. They undertake one of the longest migrations of any mammal in the world. They were the first whale species to be removed from the Endangered Species List after almost being hunted to extinction. But the species is currently struggling with an Unusual Mortality Event that was declared in 2019.

All ages are welcome.  Photos and videos shown to engage a variety of ages as well as craft materials provided.
