Interesting read. I honestly can't think of one movie I've seen with Lana Turner in which is surprising because black and white movies are my favorites -- especially from her hey day. The history of some of the crime bosses of the time and how they did things was fascinating. The abuse she and her daughter went through was just horrific. The writing was okay -- not sensationalized which was good. Just a tad dry.Interesting read. Another interesting look at life in Alaska while Kate solves another murder. Once again the killer isn't brought to justice which makes it a disappointing ending. What struck me though was that this book was published in 1995 yet many of the issues -- the white christian evangelicals trying to force their skewed way of thinking on people -- are prevalent today.Another interesting look at life in Alaska while Kate solves another murder. Disappointing. This sounded like such a cute read but it turned out to be a "check the box to include every Title VII category" juvenile read. She kinda forgot that maybe the police would be investigating the murder and that maybe Charlotte would have run into at least one. And who doesn't report a missing person? It's really more of a young teen read that even an adult cozy. The writing was pretty much grammatically correct so not a total 1.Disappointing. Disappointing. The blurb sounded so good that I asked the library to buy. This was a struggle to read. Normally when books have different timelines I read the older time period first and then go back and read the more recent time. There was no consistency in how the timelines were switched -- sometimes in a new chapter, sometimes in the middle of a chapter. I wondered if an editor looked at it. If Tate continues writing she needs to be sure she has one.
I didn't particularly care for any of the characters. They weren't just depressing -- with good reason even 10 years later after a traumatic event, -- but they weren't very nice people. I'm not sure if Tate wanted this to be a paranormal or just a thriller.
Fortunately only the last chapter was the illiterate sounding first person present tense so it was easy to skim and see what was really going on.Disappointing. Fantastic read. Isikoff and Klaidman take their readers through DA Willis's early history and how she became the amazing woman and attorney she is. Her father was such a marvelous guide in her life. They then take readers through a step by step of how and why Willis made the decisions she did regarding the case against Trump and the other RICO defendants. They don't just talk about Trump and the phone call to the governor, but the earlier RICO cases she prosecuted and how she made those decisions. They show readers another side of Emily Khors, the special grand jury foreperson and how she was a much more thoughtful and intelligent person than portrayed in the news after the fact. While this could have been a dry read but their writing voice draws you in and you soon find you can't put the book down until you've read the last page.Fantastic read. This was my second Strawser read and as good as the first. I need to finish picking up her back list. She weaves a multi-layered mystery - who are these women showing up in the middle of the night? Where did it go wrong? Or did it? And what is going on in that murky pond? Add to that Katie's personal journey to her own self-discovery. Several aspects of her life are brought together as she navigates what is, for her, a new life. There were several times I stopped reading to take a moment to consider my own parallels to Katie's actions -- different scenarios in personal life, but in work life .... oh yeah....going out from a comfort zone and realizing just how much you can accomplish on your own is something we all need to consider.

I've enjoyed this series from start to this one. In looking at Fantastic Fiction it doesn't look like another book is in the works and that's disappointing -- but I continue to hope. I didn't realize the The Dry, the first book in the series, had been made into a movie so, of course, I ordered it. This one, like the others, had a slow start and I almost DNF'd it but because I've enjoyed her other books, I kept going. TOTALLY well worth the keeping going. I really like Falk as a character. He's got a humane approach to live while at the same time making sure that the law is being followed. He's smart and his analysis of how he solves a crime is really well done.I've enjoyed this series from start to this one. Really disappointing read. So much just didn't work in this book. I could have done without the chapters about Sam. The same thing with Remy and Nolan -- gratuitous sex scenes that weren't really sex scenes but that they were getting it on and he wanted her to come to New Orleans. It didn't do anything for the story. These issues just didn't move the story along and read more like they were there to up the word or page count. None of the characters were remotely likeable -- not even Nolan this time. The story had a lot of promise but just fell flat. The blurb made it sound like there was a major earthquake but it was basically just one of those little bumps we get here in California but it wasn't really much of anything. The first two books were really good and I've seen this happen before where an author starts out great, has a loser of a book and then comes back with another one that's really good. We'll see.Really disappointing read. So much just didn't work in this book. I could have done without the chapters about Sam. What a fascinating read. I was expecting a book that talked about the weeks and months after the crash at Roswell and while it has some of that, it is a super autobiography of Col. Corso and his role in research and development that has led to so many of our advances. He writes in an engaging manner -- almost like you are reading a great fiction -- and seriously, I've love to read more if he wrote it and especially fictional novels. What a fascinating read. Not a totally bad read; the writing was kind of weak. It could have used a little tighter editing, but over all not really a bad read. Kinzinger definitely doesn't like democrats but likes trumpers even less and it comes out in the book. His own history is very interesting, especially how he made his decisions regarding his military career. He was very clear eyed and analytical about his approach there and in how he's made his decisions since. His new project....well not so new since he formed it shortly after January 6, sounds promising and something I'm considering volunteering for.Not a totally bad read; the writing was kind of weak. What an outstanding read. One that should be required reading in both English and History classes starting in junior high. The history requirement likely makes sense. Why English? Because of how Cheney lays out her history, what led her to run for congress, the jobs she held in what is truly a storied career. She is a marvelous writer and presents the events leading up to January 6 and after in a readable manner. One anyone can appreciate how the story of those events unfold.
I don't agree with the majority of her politics or beliefs, but I admire and respect her for not only what she did in and around January 6 and the J-6 Committee, but her job history in general. She is quite an amazing woman and person.
The book lays out her feelings, what she saw, what she saw and tried to stop before the insurrection and how she made her decisions after. I read Denver Riggleman, Adam Schiff's and other books on January 6, but Cheney really takes her readers behind the scenes. No, she doesn't divulge information that should not be but as I read how the committee met and how it made it's decisions there was definitely the feeling of being in the room with the members. What an outstanding read. More like a 2-1/2. I enjoy domestic thrillers -- this one wasn't all that thrilling. I'm not a fan of books that flip back and forth between timelines -- usually I read the early time period first and then go back and read the next in chronological order. Just makes more sense and you can just enjoy the read and not flip back and forth trying to figure out which person and time you are in. I also cannot stand first person present tense -- I've said it before -- it's like reading an illiterate second grader's first attempt at writing. This one was easy to ignore that annoying voice because they were all the chapters that took place in the past. The chapters that dealt with issues around elder abuse and how we need to be vigilant protecting the elderly were well done.More like a 2-1/2.
